Early Childhood Education

Education and Learning Centre

The SOS Children’s Villages work may be complemented by other services. The Education and Learning Centre at Curepipe started its operation on 19 April 2011 and has welcomed more than 1000 children from different backgrounds. It is an entity of SOS Children’s Villages Mauritius, along its promise to promote education, a facility for the early childhood and development of underprivileged children. The philosophy is that children should have access to quality education according to their stage of development. The school welcomes on yearly basis some 80 children (including toddlers), mainly from vulnerable families of the region. These families are further supported in the Family Strengthening programme which provides direct family empowerment for self-reliance of families in properly caring for their children.

With a dedicated and experienced team of educators, the school puts much emphasis on learning through play and the development of the child’s potential. A social worker provides necessary support to the parents of pupils to address the root causes of child neglect and abandonment. The school is open to other children, thus promoting an inclusive education. The activities are not limited to education only – there is also empowerment of parents to support the educational development of their children. The pre-primary school is registered with the Early Childhood Care and Education Authority (ECCEA) and the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family Welfare.

Many children who have attended the school have succeeded with satisfactory performance in primary and secondary school.

The school is equipped with dedicated teaching and learning materials and adopts a child-centered pedagogy that promotes the holistic development of every child. Through a nurturing environment and inclusive educational programmes, SOS Kindergarten Beau Bassin ensures that each child is given the opportunity to grow socially, emotionally, intellectually, and physically.
